Hellfire Missile M113 Prototype
This vehicle is a prototype (Serial Number 1) of a ground-based delivery and launcher system for the Hellfire missile system that was built in 1989. The HELLFIRE is a family of missiles designed to primarily be launched from attack helicopters and drones. However, this M113 armored personnel carrier was modified to carrier a laser projector/designator and launch system for the missiles. Operated by a two-man crew, the laser is directed towards a target a process known as illuminating. Once the target is illuminated, guidance systems in the vehicle and the missile will continue to guide the missile toward the target. Once the missile has been launched it will adjust its course utilizing built-in control surfaces and continue to the target. Once the missile has been launched, the crew can immediately begin searching for or illuminating another target.
This vehicle could carry eight missiles in its overhead launchers making a seemingly less capable vehicle a formidable opponent to eight tanks. However, the ground-launched hellfire concept did not see further development. However, the turret system would serve in some capacity as inspiration for the M-901, an M113 with two TOW missile launchers. Had this project been pursued the Hellfire likely could have replaced most wire-guided missiles in the inventory like the TOW missile system. The project was ultimately canceled due to the dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1991.
